Type I Diabetes

The "4Ts" are a simple and crucial mnemonic developed by Diabetes UK to help spot the early warning signs of type 1 diabetes. Recognizing them can prevent life-threatening complications like diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). [1, 2, 3, 4]

The 4Ts stand for:

  • Toilet: Going to the toilet to pee much more often, bedwetting in a previously dry child, or unusually heavy nappies in babies.
  • Thirsty: Constantly feeling thirsty and being unable to quench it.
  • Tired: Feeling excessively tired, lethargic, and having noticeably lower energy than usual.
  • Thinner: Unexplained weight loss, losing muscle mass, or looking thinner than normal. [1, 2, 3]

If you or your child are experiencing any of these symptoms, see a doctor or local healthcare professional immediately for a simple blood glucose test. For more information and resources on managing or checking for the condition, you can visit the NHS Type 1 Diabetes Guide. [1, 2, 3, 4]
