About pharmacists

As qualified healthcare professionals, pharmacists can offer advice on minor illnesses such as:

  • coughs
  • colds
  • sore throats
  • tummy trouble
  • aches and pains

They can also advise on medicine that you can buy without a prescription.

Many pharmacies are open until late and at weekends. You do not need an appointment.

Most pharmacies have a private consultation room where you can discuss issues with pharmacy staff without being overheard.

Medication Support Department

Historically, pharmacies have been permitted to order medications on behalf of patients who are vulnerable or using monitored dosage systems (medipacks/blister packs). However,  it has come to our attention that this process is being misused. A significant number of patients were unaware that their medications had been ordered, and several inappropriate or unnecessary medication requests were identified.

In light of this, we have reviewed our current procedures and will be implementing a change to improve patient safety and reduce medication waste.

Effective from 16th June 2025:
Pharmacies will only be permitted to order medication on behalf of patients who are either:

  • Classed as vulnerable
  • Receiving medications in blister packs/monitored dosage systems.

All other patients will be required to order their own medications through one of the following methods:

  • Via the MSD voicemail ordering phone line 0121 468 0680
  • Through the NHS App

Orders MSD receive from appliance companies / care homes / nutritional feeds will be not be affected –MSD will still process these as normal.

Please note MSD can send text message back to patients regarding processing.  From land line only contacted if there is any problem of medication ordering or if patient request the call back.
